What Watkins can bring to Al Hilal

Ollie Watkins arrives at Al Hilal with a record that makes the appeal easy to understand. In six seasons at Aston Villa, he reached double figures every year and became the club’s leading Premier League scorer. He leaves with 91 league goals and 108 in all competitions, a substantial return from a forward whose contribution has rarely depended on one exceptional spell.

Al Hilal confirmed his signing on Sunday, August 30, on a three year contract. The fee has been reported at around £50 million, with different accounts including additional payments in a slightly higher total. The club’s announcement did not disclose a price. What it did establish was the immediate plan: Watkins was expected to join training that evening ahead of Tuesday’s match against Al Ahli.

He enters a side that has started the league season well, winning its first three games and scoring twelve goals. The purpose of the signing extends beyond correcting an early problem. Simone Inzaghi needs an attack that can remain productive through domestic and Asian commitments, including the matches in which an opponent gives Al Hilal little room and one extra finish could change the result.

Last season makes that requirement particularly clear. Al Hilal went through the league without losing and still finished second, two points behind Al Nassr. Their nine draws were enough to separate an excellent campaign from a title. It would be too simple to assign every dropped point to the strikers, but a club in that position has good reason to look for a forward with a sustained history of turning opportunities into goals.

Watkins’ route to that record took him through Exeter City and Brentford before Villa signed him in 2020. He became an England international during his time in Birmingham and helped Villa win the Europa League last season. Those achievements bring experience of different pressures, from establishing himself in the Premier League to contributing in a European campaign. He is joining Al Hilal after an important period in his career rather than after years on the fringes of his club.

The most productive league season under Unai Emery remains a useful illustration of what Watkins can offer. In 2023/24, he scored nineteen goals and provided thirteen assists, winning the Premier League’s Playmaker award as Villa qualified for the Champions League. That combination matters. He can finish an attack, but he has also shown that his movement and decisions can create goals for the players arriving around him.

The temptation is to reduce him to a runner who needs the ball played ahead of him. His willingness to attack space is certainly important, yet the assists argue for a broader view. A striker who moves into a channel can pull a defender away from the middle and leave a teammate a route towards goal. The value of that movement depends on the next pass and on someone recognising the opening, not simply on how quickly the striker runs.

Al Hilal have players capable of finding those passes. Ruben Neves and Sergej Milinkovic Savic offer options from midfield, while new signing Crysencio Summerville gives Inzaghi another forward who can carry the ball at defenders. The reported pursuit of Gabriel Martinelli would add further choices if it is completed. Watkins’ task is to learn the timing of those players quickly enough that a promising run becomes a pass received in a useful position.

That understanding will be important against opponents who defend deep. There may be little space for a long run beyond the back line, and Watkins will have to help create room through shorter movements around the penalty area. A defender pulled towards a cross, a striker arriving between opponents or a pass returned to a supporting midfielder can provide an opening without the whole defence moving far from its goal. Al Hilal need him involved in those passages as well as in attacks with open space ahead.

His work without possession is another potential benefit, although it should be judged as part of the team rather than as a solitary quality. A forward can begin a press, but the midfield and wide players must respond if the first challenge is to achieve anything. Inzaghi will decide where Watkins should engage and what space the others should protect. Adding an energetic striker helps only when that work contributes to an organised response behind him.

There are sensible reasons to leave room for adjustment. Watkins is thirty, changes clubs after six years and will be learning the preferences of several teammates who are themselves new to Al Hilal. His history of regular scoring is persuasive evidence of ability, not a guarantee that every early chance will go in. A short period of adaptation would need to be assessed alongside the opportunities being created and the quality of his involvement, rather than through a running count of missed chances alone.

Nor is his international record a substitute for the club evidence. He has made 24 appearances for England and scored seven goals, with his late winner against the Netherlands at Euro 2024 remaining the moment many supporters recall most readily. It showed the value of a substitute arriving ready to exploit a small opening. At Al Hilal, the expectation will be built across many more minutes and a much larger share of the team’s attacking work.

The transfer gives Inzaghi a forward accustomed to carrying that responsibility. Watkins has scored regularly, helped teammates score and remained useful across six changing seasons at Villa. Al Hilal’s task is to give those qualities a clear place in their own attack. If the understanding develops, his arrival can help turn more of their control into goals and more of their close games into wins. That is a reasonable ambition for the signing, and a more useful measure than expecting every match to reproduce the best moments of his time in England.
