The fee is 58.4 million euros plus 2 million in add-ons, which The Athletic reports as £50 million with a small amount on top, on a contract reported to run for four years. Aston Villa rejected four earlier offers, the last of them worth £45 million, before the player made clear he was not going to play for them again. The number matters less than what it says about Al Hilal's summer, in which Simone Inzaghi asked for a specific type of striker and the club spent the window clearing space for him.

To understand why, we need to go back to the last season. Al Hilal went 34 league matches without losing, the longest unbeaten run in the division, and finished second to Al Nassr. Their top scorer in the league was Marcos Leonardo with 13. Cristiano Ronaldo scored 28 for the champions, Ivan Toney 32 for Al Ahli and Julián Quiñones 33 for Al Qadsiah, and Al Nassr scored 91 league goals as a team. There was a 15-goal gap between Hilal's leading scorer and Ronaldo. 

Leonardo was left off the foreign player list for the Clásico against Al Ittihad in February, his sixth consecutive absence, for what the club called technical reasons. Darwin Núñez produced the occasional afternoon like the 5-0 at Al Ettifaq in October, two goals and an assist, and still finished the league season behind Leonardo. Karim Benzema arrived in January at 38, and by the summer the reporting was of arguments with the technical staff rather than goals. Inzaghi had four centre-forwards and none of them seemed like the obvious answer upfront.

So the club sold. Malcom went to Al Jazira, Núñez went on loan to Al Diriyah, Leonardo went to Ajax, and Benzema's contract has supposedly terminated by mutual agreement now that the Watkins deal is done. Crysencio Summerville arrived from West Ham for 64.5 million euros to supply from the left, and the club is reported to be close to Gabriel Martinelli, though that one is not yet confirmed. Watkins walks into a squad where the only other centre-forward signed from abroad is Mohamed Kader Meïté, who is 18.

That is a status he has been used to for six years. Watkins came through non-league at Weston-super-Mare, then Exeter City, then Brentford, and Villa paid a then club record £28 million for him in September 2020 after missing out on Callum Wilson. His first Premier League goals were a hat-trick in the 7-2 win over Liverpool, and he has since scored 108 in 278 appearances for the club. Only Mohamed Salah has more non-penalty goals and assists in the Premier League since his debut.

The version of Watkins that Al Hilal have bought was built by Unai Emery. When the Spaniard arrived in November 2022 he told the striker to stop working the channels and stay within the width of the box, and showed him clips of Carlos Bacca and Edinson Cavani. His touches fell and his chances rose, and the following season he scored 19 league goals and led the league with 13 assists. That 2023-24 campaign is the high-water mark, and the two seasons since tell a slightly different story.

The goals have held. Watkins scored 16 league goals in each of the last two seasons, from expected goals totals of 15.35 and 14.62, which puts him slightly ahead of the chances he was given rather than far ahead of them. He took 84 shots in 2024-25 and 83 in 2025-26, with a shade under half on target both years. Per 90 minutes his output sits at roughly half a goal, which is the mark of a striker who converts on volume and consistency rather than on the spectacular. Across the two seasons he scored 32 from 30 expected, which describes a striker who takes what the team creates for him and adds a little on top.

The other number that really jumps out is availability. The Athletic notes he has played 221 of Villa's 229 league games since signing, despite a cyst on his knee that has bothered him for two seasons. He started 31 league games in 2024-25 and 33 in 2025-26. Set that against a Hilal striker room where the best player was left out for six matches and the oldest was managing his minutes, and the appeal to Inzaghi goes beyond his goals.

The 2024-25 season needs a footnote. Villa signed Marcus Rashford on loan in January and Emery restructured the attack around him, to the point where Watkins started only one of Villa's last five games and sat on the bench for the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain despite being the club's top scorer. In the same window Arsenal, the club he supported as a boy, bid £40 million, and Villa sold Jhon Durán to Al Nassr for £64.5 million instead. Watkins said nothing publicly and a senior figure at Villa Park later described him as a gentleman for it, a description that has been tested a little this month.

Then 2025-26, which is why the fee reached what it did. Watkins scored once in his first 13 appearances, was left out of the England squad in March, and then scored 13 in his next 23 league matches. He scored the third goal against Freiburg in the Europa League final, Villa's first European trophy since the 1980s, and finished with a brace against Manchester City on the last day to secure fourth place. He ended the season on 21 goals and five assists in 55 appearances. The slow start and the strong finish belong to the same player, and Al Hilal will get both.

England is a smaller sample and a less flattering one. Watkins has 20 caps and six goals, the sixth of which came against Wales at Wembley last October, a game he left before half-time after sliding into the post. Thomas Tuchel used him for 59 minutes across two matches before the World Cup and then, at the tournament itself, gave him two appearances: the final group game against Panama and 45 minutes in the 6-4 third-place win over France. For that match, with Harry Kane rested, Tuchel started Ivan Toney ahead of him. Watkins had said during the tournament that there are times when it is better to be a substitute than to start, which was a diplomatic way of describing a role he was rarely asked to play.

The England picture fits the club data. Tuchel wanted a striker who drops, holds and links, which is Kane's job, and Watkins is the opposite profile. The international moment people remember is the Euro 2024 semi-final winner against the Netherlands, and it was the whole Watkins game in one clip: on as an 81st-minute substitute, one run across the defender, one first-time finish in the 90th. That is the goal Inzaghi has bought, and the question is whether his system produces the pass that leads to it.

It should. Inzaghi's 3-5-2 at Inter was built on complementary pairs, one striker dropping and the other running, and Watkins is the runner. Behind him Hilal have Sergej Milinković-Savić and Rúben Neves in central midfield, Theo Hernández crossing from left wing-back and Summerville cutting in from the left, which is more crossing and through-ball quality than Watkins had at Villa Park in either of the last two seasons. The partner is the open question. Martinelli or Summerville as a second striker gives him a dropping foil, while a 3-4-2-1 with both as inside forwards makes him a lone nine again, which is where his Villa numbers came from anyway. The only arrangement that fails is the one that asks him to be the striker who drops.

Out of possession he is the biggest upgrade of all. Inzaghi's sides press in a coordinated front three, two strikers and a midfielder jumping, and last season's Hilal forwards were poor at it, which is not a criticism of a 38-year-old so much as a statement of fact. Watkins led Villa's press for six years under three managers. The goals will be counted, and the turnovers he forces at the top of the pitch will not, but Inzaghi will notice both.

Now the weaknesses, because 58 million euros buys a striker, not a perfect one. He missed 20 big chances in 2024-25 and 17 in 2025-26, and his goals-minus-expected-goals figure is roughly neutral over the period, so nobody should expect him to score chances that Leonardo would have missed. He was caught offside 25 times last season, up from 16, which is either a timing problem or a symptom of Villa going more direct, and probably both. His take-on numbers are low, so he will not carry the ball past a man when the wing-backs are pinned back, and he has scored six of 12 career penalties, so Neves keeps that job. He also turns 31 in December on what is reported to be a four-year contract, in a role that relies on movement, which is the attribute that goes first.

The low-block question is the one Gulf readers will ask first, having watched mid-table sides sit in against Hilal for years. Watkins' league numbers came in an open Premier League, and his Champions League line in 2024-25, one goal and four assists in 695 minutes, suggests he becomes a facilitator against organised elite defences. Two things mitigate that. The first is that he scores headers through timing rather than height, at 180 centimetres, by attacking the space between centre-backs, which is the skill that beats a deep line fed by wing-back crosses. The second is that SPL back lines make the sort of lapses his runs are designed to punish. Nobody at Hilal expects him to match Quiñones' 33 for Al Qadsiah, and the job description is closer to turning eight of last season's draws into wins.

Which brings us to how it ended in Birmingham, because it will follow him for a few weeks. Watkins did not train with the squad before the opening-day 4-0 defeat at Brighton after Villa rejected the fourth bid, and Emery's response when asked about it on Sky Sports was to stare at the camera and say "silence". Watkins returned to training on the Monday, apologised to his team-mates, and flew out on the Thursday after what The Athletic describes as an emotional goodbye with the manager. Villa had offered him a new contract to 2030, he had two years left on the old one, and at 30 this was one of the last windows in which a move of this size was available.

Villa were dealing with an exodus at the same time. Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa, Emiliano Martínez and Lucas Digne have all left this summer, and the club has spent £65 million on Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea as the direct replacement. Emery was never going to release his top scorer cheaply into that, which is why the fee climbed from £38 million to £45 million to £50 million and why the player's patience ran out before the club's did. 

His first  test comes as soon as the league programme resumes, with the champions Al Nassr as the benchmark. Watkins arrives having scored once in his first 13 appearances last season, so a slow start in Riyadh would not be out of character, and the club and its supporters will have to decide how much patience 58 million euros buys. On the evidence of the last two years the goals will arrive eventually and in bulk. Al Hilal went 34 games unbeaten and finished second because they drew too many of them, and that is the number Watkins has been signed to change.
