What Summerville can add to Al Hilal’s attack

Al Hilal have bought a player who wants to be watched. In his first interview since leaving West Ham, Crysencio Summerville spoke about the pleasure of entertaining supporters and the influence Neymar had on him as a boy. The ambition suits a winger whose most immediate attraction is his willingness to receive the ball, face a defender and try to go past him.

The transfer also comes with substantial expectations. The reported agreement is worth an initial £55 million, with another £5 million available through additional payments. His contract runs for four years. At twenty four, Summerville arrives as a player whose best seasons should still be ahead of him, rather than a famous name being asked to reproduce the end of an established career.

That distinction matters for Al Hilal. They finished second in the league last season and have brought him into a side already containing experienced attackers. The new signing must give Simone Inzaghi something that changes a match, while learning how to fit alongside players who already command the ball and the important spaces around the penalty area.

His final season at West Ham offers a more useful starting point than the fee alone. Summerville scored seven goals and supplied five assists in 34 appearances across competitions. Those are contributions from a winger, not the returns of a striker around whom every attack was built. They also show why judging him only by his finishing would leave out part of the reason to sign him.

At the World Cup, he added two goals for the Netherlands. The tournament gave him another stage on which to show that his attacking qualities can travel beyond club football. It did not settle what his numbers will be in Saudi Arabia. Different opponents and a different role can create new opportunities, but they can also require decisions he has not previously been asked to make as often.

The clearest opportunity is on the left. From there, Summerville can threaten the space outside a defender before moving towards his stronger right foot. That choice is useful even when he does not complete the dribble. If a second opponent comes across to help, someone else may become available. Al Hilal’s challenge is to make that reaction lead to a pass, a run or a shot before the defence can recover its shape.

Receiving the ball early will be important. There is a considerable difference between facing a defender who is still turning towards his own goal and receiving against an opponent already set, with another player close behind. Quick movement from midfield can give Summerville the first kind of situation. Slow circulation may leave him repeatedly trying to solve the second on his own.

Theo Hernandez adds an interesting possibility on that side of the pitch. His forward runs can draw attention away from the winger, but the partnership needs coordination. If both players arrive in the same space at the same moment, the defence has less to consider. If one holds the width while the other attacks inside, Al Hilal can ask a more difficult question. How Inzaghi distributes those movements will shape Summerville’s early role.

There is also Salem Al Dawsari to consider. He remains an important presence in the attack, and a new arrival on the left does not automatically make the position a simple contest between two names. A long season creates room for rotation and different combinations. The coach can use that depth to change the way Al Hilal approach an opponent, provided the players understand what each selection requires.

The central forwards will have responsibilities in the relationship too. When Summerville beats the first defender, there must be an option beyond him. A run towards the near post, a player waiting for a pass back from the byline and support at the edge of the area can turn a successful dribble into a better opportunity. Without those movements, an exciting piece of individual play can finish with a difficult shot from a poor angle.

His work without the ball will affect how much freedom he receives. If Hernandez advances and possession is lost, Al Hilal need a clear response on that flank. Summerville may be asked to pressure the first pass, recover towards midfield or hold a position that allows a teammate to cover. Those duties are part of integrating an attacking signing, rather than a separate issue to be solved after the goals begin.

The early matches should therefore be read with some patience. A winger can influence a game by making the pass before an assist, forcing a defensive change or creating room for another attacker. Equally, a few successful dribbles will not by themselves justify the investment. Al Hilal need those actions to become repeatable contributions to chances and points.

Summerville has already joined the preparation in Austria, giving him time to work with his new teammates before the league begins. The club have committed to more than a short burst of excitement. They are asking a direct, ambitious player to become a dependable part of an attack expected to win trophies. His ability to make a defender retreat is the starting point. What Al Hilal do with the space that follows will determine the value of the signing.
